A huge fire at a Western Greyhound bus depot at Summercourt near Newquay has destroyed 37 buses.

At 1.05am this morning Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service received a call to a fire in a bus depot. On arrival crews found there to be nine buses involved and a diesel tank in the vicinity.

Crews from St Columb, St Dennis, Newquay, St Austell, Perranporth were called in to fight the fire, with the assistance of the Water carrier from Wadebridge and the control unit from Launceston.

At 02:37 hrs assistance for "Make Pumps eight" was made and further appliances from Truro and Mevagissey were mobilised. The incident was divided into two areas and five main jets, one hose reel jet are being supplied by one hydrant and an open water source.

Along side the major appliances two landrovers attended and specialised equipment - command support vehicle from Launceston, an operational support vehicle from St Austell, and water carrier from Wadebridge and a welfare wagon from St Dennis.

Once the fire was confirmed out it was established that a total of 37 buses had been involved.

This morning Cornwall Fire and Rescue service will be carrying out a fire investigation along with police scenes of crimes officers to try to establish the cause of the fire.

The scale of the blaze means that bus services across Mid Cornwall will be affected, with no park and ride service from Truro operating today.

Disruption to school and general bus services is also expected.

Unless stated, all other services are running as normal.

The A3058 Newquay to St Austell Road will remain closed for most of the day between Summercourt crossroads and Brighton Cross roundabout. The Highways Agency have diversions in place.
