Olympic torchbearers from across Cornwall have gathered at Land’s End to celebrate the anniversary of the torch relay, one year ago to the day.

The event on Sunday was held as part of the national Community Games initiative which aims to retrace the path of the original torch relay, celebrating inspirational community champions along the way.

The nominated recipient for Cornwall who received a commemorative ‘Shine a Light’ jersey was Yvonne Turner, volunteer and official with Mounts Bay Harriers.

“It was a great surprise to be awarded the jersey and I feel very privileged as there are so many people in our communities that do great work and are equally as deserving. I have very fond memories of 2012, as I was also a Games Maker and had a wonderful time. So it’s brilliant to come here today and see Torchbearers and Games Makers celebrating the anniversary of the torch relay” said Yvonne.

Bruce Lockie of Cornwall Sports Partnership who organised the day, said: “Its’ been brilliant to be able to recognise Yvonne’s’ superb contribution to her community as a ‘Shining Light’. Equally impressive has been the number of torchbearers and games makers who have made the effort to come and celebrate the day with us. They have made this a special occasion and I would like to thank them for their support. Special thanks also to the local fitness instructors that put on activity during the day and Land’s End for being great hosts for the event.”
