Drivers in Falmouth could be facing 10 months of traffic hell as a £2.2million roundabout replacement moves a step closer.

Close to £1.6 million will be spent by the Department of Transport on constructing a new roundabout for Falmouth’s Union Corner.

The replacement roundabout could also play a key role in the future development of farmland off Bickland Water Road.

The junction, linking the A39 with Budock and Boslowick, is currently served by a double mini-roundabout. In recent years the system has struggled to cope with increased traffic, leading to long queues forming at the junction during busy times.

No details are available yet about how traffic will be diverted during the building work, which is aimed at providing a long term solution to traffic congestion.

Welcoming the news, Falmouth's MP Sarah Newton said that following the Secretary of State for Transport’s recent visit to Falmouth it has been announced that funding for the construction of a large single roundabout at the junction will be provided. It is claimed the new simplified system will significantly reduce motorist waiting times.

Mrs Newton said: ‘‘I am delighted that the Secretary of State has recognised the need to tackle this local pinch point, which has been a real headache for local businesses and a cause of frustration to residents and visitors alike.

‘‘I know that Cornwall Council has been working to address this issue for some time, and pay tribute to them for helping to make the strong case that has now secured the funding necessary to improve the junction.

‘‘Whilst the Government’s investment in Cornwall’s road network is welcome more needs to be done. I will in particular continue to press for the dualling of the A30 at Chiverton, a long overdue project that would make a real difference to businesses across central and western Cornwall.’’
