Nautical name suggestions for a new Penryn housing estate left the town council mystified this week.
At their meeting on Monday councillors heard from housebuilders Bovis Homes, who are at work on 92 new houses and apartments on land behind the Asda supermarket.
The developers sought the council’s opinion on a list of suggested road names taken from a yachting glossary including “lugsail,” “gimbals” and “gollywobbler.”
Councillor John Langan was not impressed by these suggestions. He said: “Would you want to live on any of those streets? I wouldn’t foist it on anybody.”
Councillor Shelley Peters asked: “Can it not be related to the area it’s built in? Because yachting has got nothing to do with that area [south of the football ground] whatsoever.”
After a short debate, members resolved to recommend councillor Cait Hutchings suggestion that Cornish names be considered.
In particular, they were keen that one road should be named to commemorate the Gorsedh, which Penryn is hosting in September.
