Firefighters from across mid Cornwall were drafted in to tackle a blaze in a three story Newquay building at lunchtime this afternoon (Monday)

Crews from Newquay, St Columb, Truro, St Austell and Launceston were called in to fight the flames, with the fire reported to have spread to an annexe at the property at the junction of Bank Street and The Crescent.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus gained access to the fire just after 1pm, using a hosereel and a jet.

The Operational Support Vehicle from St. Austell was called out at 2pm. Ambulance personel were needed to treat persons for the effect of smoke inhalation while Devon & Cornwall Police were requested for traffic control.

Crews cut away areas of the building to check for spreading flames.

The fire was brought under control shortly after 2pm.

A fire service spokesman said that the fire started accidentally in a roof space at the rear.

The person suffering smoke inhalation was treated at the scene by ambulance personnel.
