More than 1,000 passengers were unable to disembark from the 65,000-ton cruise ship Marina this week as a heavy south easterly swell prevented their landing.

The ship was anchored close to Pendennis Point on Monday morning on a cruise call but, due to the swell, the ship’s and local tenders could not be safely deployed.

Instead, just a stone’s throw from shore, her mainly American and Canadian passengers could only catch a glimpse of Pendennis Castle.

The luxury vessel took on bunkers from the Cap Mejean bunkering tanker before sailing for Southampton.

Australian passengers aboard the Island Sky were more fortunate. The mega-yacht looking cruise ship berthed on County Wharf from where excursions were made to Trebah Gardens at Mawnan Smith and to St Michael’s Mount at Marazion.

The ship sailed late on Monday evening for Tresco on her Round Britain Cruise.
