A woman who saw both world wars has reached the grand old age of 100, surrounded by family and friends at her Helston home.

The big day saw Gladys receive a card from the Queen to mark her special occasion.

Gladys Dale was born on June 8, 1913, one year before the start of World War I, and marked the milestone on Saturday at the Coastline residential home at Hens Horn Court.

The only girl in a family of five children, Gladys was in domestic service at the Trelowarren Estate from the time she left school until she married farm worker Harold Dale in 1939, aged 26.

The pair went on to have three children, two boys and a girl, and enjoyed “many happy years together”.

A spokesperson for Coastline said Gladys had many friends and family members arrive to help her celebrate her birthday on Saturday, and that it was wonderful to see her still enjoying her independence.
