Falmouth councillors last week agreed to requests for grant funding from four local organisations, totalling more than £1,700.

At the first meeting of Falmouth Town Council's new finance and general purposes committee, members approved an application for £200 from Carnon Carers who will spend the money to hire a bus for a trip to see Christmas lights.

The Friends of Penmere Station have been granted £170 towards its ongoing work at the platform and car park. The group aims to buy new paving and gravel, a 60m water hose and reel and replace worn gardening tools.

A grant of £863 was approved for Falmouth Spring Flower Show towards the cost of storage and rent and councillors are to advise organises to apply for an annual grant in future. Councillor Steve Eva said: “This benefits the whole of Falmouth financially - it's one of those events where we give them £1 and it makes £7.

“I think it's a good idea that they get an annual grant so they don't have to come cap in hand.”

The final grant of the evening was awarded to the organisers of the Fal River Festival who had applied for £500 towards the cost of this year's event.
