Residents are being encouraged to get into the green-fingered spirit by joining forces to improve their neighbourhoods for this year’s Cornwall in Bloom.

Organised by Cornwall Council the annual event, now in its fourth year has encouraged many to give their gardens and open spaces a make over. So far, 45 groups have applied to take part in the competition.

With judging due to take place in July and August, groups are being encouraged to register now before the deadline of Sunday 30 June.

A range of projects have been set up since the competition started in 2009, including woodland groups and allotment societies. This year, the event also includes a primary schools’ competition in Newquay and Truro to encourage youngsters to grow as many potatoes as they can from a single seed potato.

“Cornwall in Bloom provides a great opportunity for local communities to come together to improve their neighbourhoods,” said Councillor Edwina Hannaford, Cornwall Council portfolio holder for Environment, Heritage and Planning. “The event’s success over the last four years is testament to the dedication of those volunteers who make our villages and towns so inviting.”
