By a happy quirk of the weather the drizzle eased for an hour in the early afternoon of Sunday while the choir sang in Events Square in Falmouth’s tenth International Sea Shanty Festival.

The choir was conducted by musical director, Elaine Tangye, and accompanied by regular pianist, George Smith.

Nankersey’s programme was not entirely nautical, but it seemed to go well with a large audience, many of them singing along with songs when they could.

“The staging provided was very professional and the choir took to using microphones as if they had long been part of their lives. They enjoyed performing in front of such an appreciative audience and sang many of their pieces really well,” said Elaine Tangye afterwards. Before the choir’s performance the BBC recorded songs from its programme, parts of which were played on BBC Radio 4 later that day.

The choir’s next concert will be in Gwennap Parish Church on Wednesday starting at 7.30pm.

The choir practises in St Peter’s Church hall, Flushing on Mondays from 7.30 to about 9.30pm. Anyone interested in singing with the choir should contact the secretary, Fred Bidgood, on 013236 373984.
