After attending to formalities, chairman Dot Wickham, welcomed Sandra and Brenda (secretary and treasurer of neighbouring ‘Falmouth Garden Club’) who had kindly agreed to judge the members’ exhibits.

The Floral Art section saw some ingenious and colourful displays whilst the section for ‘Garden/Greenhouse’ had the most entries. It was especially good to see the newer members taking part in both the floral art and plant sections. After the judging and before Mabe’s members viewed all the entries, the judges commented on the very high standard of presentation and variety of classes to be judged, and congratulated them on putting on an excellent show. Val Bidgood was the overall winner with 93 points; Carol Bailey was second with 39 points and Dot Wickham came third with 38 points. There had been 63 entries in 16 classes. Dot Wickham warmly thanked Sandra and Brenda for their difficult task (well performed) and presented each lady with a plant as a ‘thank you’ gift.

The previous weekend, members had been joined by family and friends on a coach trip to The Lost Gardens of Heligan. The coach set off from Mabe in heavy rain but by the time Heligan was reached, blue skies were appearing and the afternoon turned out to be glorious. By all accounts, the most popular areas with members on the day were the walled vegetable and flower gardens.

The next meeting at the Youth and Community Hall, Cunningham Park, Mabe is on Monday, July 15 at 7pm when Cheryl Chatterton will be talking about ‘Growing Fruit and Vegetables in Containers’.
