This month’s talk was given to us by Andrew Mills, Nursery Manager of Burncoose, with over 20 years experience in plant production. The talk was titled ‘A Year at Chelsea’ and was given in Andrew’s unique and amusing way.

The work and planning of Chelsea Flower Show begins long before May each year, with endless forms, covering items from Health and Safety, to size of lorry bringing props and plants, how many staff attending etc. First the design is planned which has to be approved by Chelsea Flower Show.

Burncoose have visited Chelsea Flower Show 30 times, winning 21 Gold, seven Silver Gilt and two Silver’s. The stand this year contained over 400 different plants, all of which must be labelled. Burncoose are sponsored by EMI, and also work closely with the Prince’s Trust. Good publicity is achieved when famous celebrities visit the stand on Press Day, this year Helen Mirren visit to the stand assured press coverage. All the hard work by the team pays off when the awards are given, finally the last day arrives, and all the plants are sold to the public, which can be rather chaotic!

Everything is then dismantled and transported back to Cornwall, and effectively the planning starts all over again!

Andrew’s amusing and witty talk ensured the hall was filled with laughter. Lesley Hobson warmly thanked Andrew. Pat Medlin won the competition for the best June Flower which was an Old English Rose.

Marine Conservation is the subject of next month’s talk on July 10 at Budock Hall, 7.30pm, all are welcome.
