A day centre for older people in Redruth has been saved from closure thanks to local care provider Coastline Care.

The centre, based at Miners Court in the town, is attended by up to 60 people each week. It gives them a chance to meet friends while receiving support from a team of staff and volunteers. Hot meals are provided along with refreshments and activities.

It was threatened with closure after charity Cornwall Community Volunteer Services (CCVS) said it could not continue running the centre.

Coastline Care said it had stepped in to protect the "vital community service" and the jobs it provides.

Operations Manager for the older person’s service, Kirsty McLeod said, “We are very excited to be working with such a rewarding service for so many local people. There is considerable research which shows the positive impact social inclusion, having a nutritious meal and staying hydrated has on physical and mental wellbeing. The response from the people who use the service has been overwhelming.”

Coastline Care officially took over today (Monday) and says it will be "working closely with colleagues and clients to make sure the day centre continues to meet their needs while developing extra services".
