Three fire engines and a water carrier were scrambled to a shed fire on Pendennis Point in Falmouth this weekend amid fears that somebody might be trapped inside.

At 9.25am on Saturday morning fire control received several calls from boats passing the point about a fire in the woods between Falmouth Docks and Middle Point.

One crew of five firefighters from Falmouth were mobilised to investigate and at 9.47am found the source of the smoke, which was a single storey wooden hut off Castle Drive.

On discovery of the fire, a second engine was mobilised because of fears that someone might be inside the eight metre by five metre hut.

By 9.55am an extra fire engine and a water carrier were called up as firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the blaze.

Teams were withdrawn from the building due to the build-up of hot gases and firefighters tackled the blaze externally using main jets supplied from hydrants.

Crews used a triple extension roof ladder to ventilate the gases through the roof.

Once the fire was out the crews searched the building and established that no one was inside.

An investigation is currently underway into the cause of the fire by Cornwall Fire and Rescue service.
