A spokesman said that a huge variety of roles are carried out by police constables, in an 'incredibly challenging and rewarding job".

Adding: "We are seeking dedicated, positive and empathetic people to fill vacancies throughout Devon and Cornwall over the coming years. As a police constable you would work closely with the community and undertake activities to tackle crime and disorder at a local level.

"This is the first time that Devon and Cornwall Police has opened an external application process for Police Constables for a number of years. We are expecting a high level of applications and because of this we have put in place a new registration and application process and some criteria that all applicants must meet.

"Regrettably during this time we are unable to take calls, therefore all enquires should be by e-mail to the email address below. We aim to respond to all emails within 48 hours during normal office hours, Monday to Friday 9am-5pm.
