For the first time in five years, Falmouth’s parks, gardens and open spaces were seen in their very best light when judged for the South West In Bloom Awards on Wednesday.

In recent years judges have been taken around the town in the pouring rain, but this time judge, Martin Ford, was able to view the town’s best bits in blistering sunshine.

Escorted by town clerk Mark Williams and Cornwall Council’s Viv Bidgood, Mr Ford was shown Kimberley Park, The Mission to Seafarers’ garden, Queen Mary Gardens, the allotments at Swanvale, Falmouth School’s market garden and Gyllyngdune Gardens.

Mr Williams said afterwards: “It was a pleasant change to escort the judge in glorious sunshine - the last several I have done it has always rained.

“It was also an opportunity for us to showcase our parks and gardens that saw us become the Best Seaside Town in the South West in 2012, and to show the work of all our community partners and champions, from school gardeners to allotmenteers, and from commercial premises to private gardens. Hopefully we can be as successful in 2013.”

Later this month national Britain in Bloom judges will be in town, as Falmouth’s 2012 success resulted in an invitation to the national competition.
