Hayle-based charity Disability Cornwall has received a £200 donation from a Penryn supermarket as part of its community fundraising initiative.

Customers have been voting for one of three organisations over the past two months, by placing tokens into a clear plastic box in Asda Penryn's new community area as part of the "Chosen by you... given by us" scheme.

Disability Cornwall received the most votes and was presented with a £200 donation by Bernadette Snow, Asda Penryn community life champion.

Store manager Steve Lehan said: "The 'chosen by you given by us' scheme reflects our commitment to supporting the local community.

"We’re thrilled to give Disability Cornwall this donation and would like to thank everyone for taking part.”

Chair of Disability Cornwall, Steve Paget, said: “We are delighted to have been thought of in this way by Asda’s customers and are very grateful to everyone who voted for us.”

The £200 has been funded by the Asda Foundation, which was set up in 1988 to support local good causes chosen by Asda colleagues and is funded by profits from the mid–week national lottery.

Disability Cornwall manages a range of projects and services including information, advice and support for disabled people, their families, carers and professionals.

It is closely involved with the "personalisation" of social care by assisting personal budgets recipients with payroll and managed accounts.
