A 20-year-old Falmouth man who has been in trouble with the law many times is being given a chance to redeem himself this week, by one of his victims.

Luke Anthony Pentecost let the handbrake off a parked Western Greyhound bus last July, sending it freewheeling into two motorboats and a four by four within the park and float site at Ponsharden.

The youth, of Meadowbank Road, pleaded guilty to causing nearly £13,000 worth of damage in April but sentencing was adjourned for his other crimes to be considered.

He has also pleaded guilty to burglary of the then University College Falmouth’s Woodlane campus last May smashing the window of a town centre bank in November.

On Friday at Truro Crown Court Pentecost was sentenced to 14 months in jail, suspended for a year.

He was also ordered to do 80 hours unpaid work, pay a victim surcharge of £100 and be subject to a curfew every Friday and Saturday night from 7pm to 7am until October 13.

Tim Light, managing director of Cornwall Ferries who operate the park and float, said it was lucky that more damage wasn’t done and that nobody was hurt.

“I feel very sorry for the perpetrator, the silly bugger that did it, and hope that this has taught him a lesson,” he said.

Mr Light does not hold a grudge against Pentecost however and is “sure he didn’t, probably, mean to do that,” he said, “I think it’s probably an act of stupidity that went wrong.”

In fact, “if he’s looking for a way to atone for his sins,” Mr Light said, “perhaps he wants to come work for us for a few months to help us out.”

“Some people just need a bit of time and a bit of space and they get out of these things,” he said.

“Maybe he’s at a bad time in life and maybe he needs a turn around.”

This is not Pentecost’s first time in court, having appeared in front of magistrates as far back as February 2011, aged 18, for being drunk and disorderly.

He burgled the then University College Falmouth's Woodlane Campus on May 26 last year and stole a camera, voice recorder and projector.

Jordan Westlake, aged 21 of Harbour Court, and Jowan Gerald Nancholas, aged 21 of Langton Road, were also sentenced earlier the same week in connection with the university burglary.

Westlake received a 12 month jail sentence suspended for a year with a 12 month supervision order and three month curfew.

Nancholas meanwhile was ordered to do 180 hours unpaid work as part of a 12 month community order and will also have to abide by a three month curfew.

Falmouth University, the victims of the break-in, released a statement that said: “we are pleased to learn that the judicial process has been completed.”

Pentecost committed the burglary, vandalism and criminal damage while he was subject to a community order imposed on him by magistrates in February 2012 for a pub burglary where he stole four bottles of cider.
