UPDATE: Police are appealing for witnesses after a large fire broke out at the water sports centre in Rock, near Wadebridge this morning (Wednesday, July 25).


Forty fire-fighters tackled the blaze which started shortly after 3am.

Police are treating the fire as suspicious and they have launched a joint investigation with the fire service. Investigators were on the scene this morning to try and establish the cause.

Detective Inspector Tony Blatchford said: “The building has been severely damaged. Thankfully there was no-one inside at the time otherwise we could have been dealing with an even more tragic outcome.

“Although there may not have been many people around at that time in the morning we are hoping someone may have seen something that could assist with the investigation. If you saw anything suspicious please get in touch.” 

The road was closed at the junction of Rock Road and Bodmin Lane until 7.30am.  No evacuation was needed of nearby premises.

A fire service spokesman said that the fire started early in the morning at the centre in Rock near Wadebridge.

Crews from Wadebridge, Bodmin, Delabole and St Austell attended the fire at 2.45am and firefighters wearing breathing gear fighting the flames near the slipway, using water pumped from the River Camel.

Reports are that half the building, which houses Camel Ski School and Camel School of Sailing, has been destroyed by the flames.
