A thousand people have already signed a road fuel rebate petition which was only placed online at the weekend.
The petition, launched by Helston and West Cornwall MP Andrew George, call on Ministers to extend an exisiting rebate to some mainland rural areas including Cornwall.
He said that in order to be successful there needs to be strong public support to help persuade regulators in Whitehall and Europe.
The petition to the House of Commons says: "I support the proposal to extend the road fuel rebate (of, initially, 5p per litre) to Cornwall. We urge Ministers and the European Commission to fully back the plan and introduce it as soon as they can.
Mr George said: “We’re getting a phenomenal response. With strong public support and good evidence, I’m sure that we can persuade Treasury Ministers and secure a road fuel rebate for Cornwall – just as we successfully did for the Scillies.
“Paper copies of the petition will be hitting the high street and fuel stations soon”, he added.
