Three days of celebrations in Gweek raise £2,000 for village silver band: PICTURES

Three days of celebrations has helped Gweek Silver Band raise an estimated £2,000 for funds.
This was the combined total for a clay pigeon shoot on the Friday evening, Band Sunday and a pig roast last Tuesday.
Social secretary Joy Blackburn said that all the events “went very well.”
More people than usual took part in the shoot, which proved to be a good evening. In first place was Simon Young, second was Kelvin Walsh and Chris “Trucker” Johns was in third place. Beth Hopkinson won the ladies trophy and David Richards the junior.
Unfortunately the weather forecast meant that Band Sunday had to be held indoors, rather than outside like usual, which resulted in lower numbers.
Those that attended, however, enjoyed music from Gweek Silver Band members and their guests from St Keverne and Heyl bands.
Each performed a 30-minute set before joining together for the last half an hour.
Happily, the pig roast went ahead as planned without a hitch and the weather played along, staying dry and bright all evening.
Sinclair Johns auctioned off the first half a dozen slices, with the first going for £50 to Chris Hutchins who owns the shop and post office in the village.
There were sports events for the children, a tug of war competition won by Glen’s Pensioners with Helston and St Keverne Young Farmers’ Club in second and sheaf pitching, in which Derek Jenkin took the men’s title, with Steve Lawrence in second, and Rebecca Jenkin the ladies’ winner. Helston Junior Band played throughout the evening.
Mrs Blackburn said: “The skies cleared, there were lots of people there and we did very well.
“Thank you to everybody who helped and I’m glad everybody had a good time. Same place next year!”
