Falmouth Coastguard is 'Slimmer of the Year'
9:00am Monday 12th August 2013 in News
Local coastguard Alan Matthews is celebrating after being named Slimming World Man of the Year for Falmouth.
Alan spent a long time feeling unhappy with his weight due to long periods of stress and comfort eating, but now thanks to Slimming World he has shed the pounds and is much happier.
He has slimmed down from 17 stone 5.5lbs to 12 stone 12lbs after joining his local group in November 2012.
Alan said: “I hated being overweight and nothing seemed to work for me. I was very tired due to my physical job, but had to change. I always thought that slimming clubs were for women but after much cajoling from my mother and daughter who are also members I went along with them to the Athenaeum Club.
“The group was so warm and welcoming and surprisingly there were several other men there as well. There was so much to eat, no worrying about daily weighing and measuring, and I could still enjoy my favourite hearty meals like a roast dinner and homemade curry.
“As the pounds dropped off I had more energy and walking soon became part of my everyday life and I rediscovered cycling. I now regularly cycle up to 50 miles a week.
“When I started I thought I might lose a stone but here I am now 4.5 stone lighter, my blood pressure is now normal. My measurements have shrunk from a 42” waist and 19” collar to a 34” waist and 16” collar, my BMI is now healthy which is very important for my job as I do a lot of cliff rescue, which I now find a lot easier due to my weight loss.
“Being fit in time for my 50th birthday was a bonus and winning this title is just the icing on the cake.”
Pauline Chappell who runs the group said: “Alan is proof that men can benefit from the support of a group to eat healthily and get more active as obesity affects both men and women from all backgrounds, he is an inspiration to everyone.”
