Looters steal equipment from stricken Newquay surf school truck swallowed by tide
4:51pm Thursday 8th August 2013 in News
Looters described as 'scumbags' have raided equipment from a disability surf school truck that was swallowed by the tide on Newquay beach.
The Freedom Surf vehicle became stuck in the sand on Towan Beach after the public refused to get out of the way. The mass of people meant equipment designed to free the vehicle could not be used.
Reports suggest that looters were paddling out on surfboards and using snorkels to swim down and steal items after breaking in through the disabled access door on the back of the vehicle.
The loss of the truck, which is a "write off", and equipment, has put the future of the surf school in doubt, Mark Hill Freedom Surf director told the BBC.
£2,000 worth of wetsuits, tools, clothes and surf-boards were taken.
Mr Hill told the BBC: "They trashed the Land Rover and emptied all the equipment out, it's now just a shell," he said.
"It's opportunists, unfortunately, you get them everywhere. Anyone that actually knows me wouldn't dream of doing that.
"They weren't stealing from me, they were stealing from people less fortunate than themselves, from disabled children and adults."
