Pikes Hill duo give 'disgusting' benches a spruce up
9:00am Thursday 15th August 2013 in News
Two residents so incensed by the state of the public benches at Pikes Hill in Falmouth spent two days refurbishing them to ensure they were in tip-top condition for tonight’s display by the Red Arrows.
The benches, which were installed three years ago to replace decrepit ones, provide the perfect place from where to view the aerial display, affording great views across the harbour.
Clive Mathison had taken his complaint over their condition to the town council surgery last month when Ben Dickinson, highways manager at Cormac Solutions, promised to provide the necessary materials to update them.
Sandpaper and paint eventually arrived last week and Clive and fellow local resident Michael Walton, gave up their free time to give the five benches a complete make-over.
“Having campaigned to get the new benches in time for Falmouth Week three years ago, we are disappointed that there has been no maintenance of them at all since then,” said Clive. “They were in an absolutely disgusting state, covered in lichen and seagull droppings.
“We thought we would try to restore them and get them ready for the people to watch the Red Arrows. “We had hoped the council would maintain them every year.”
Clive and Michael are no strangers to taking matters into their own hands when it comes to sprucing up their neighbourhood. Clive regularly sweeps the street from the top of Minnie Place and Michael takes over from the top of Pikes Hill. Michael has also added a little colour to his garden wall, decorating it with painted flowers.
