It has been another year of outstanding achievement for students at Truro and Penwith College, which this year saw a cohort of over 1,000 A-level students achieve a pass rate of 99 per cent – nearly 1 per cent above the national average.

The important high grades (A to C) pass rate at the college rose again to a record 83.2 per cent, soaring above the national A to C grade figure of 77.2 per cent. The college even bucked this year’s widely reported national trend of a decline in A and A* grades. Whereas the proportion of those highest grade achievers dropped nationally by 0.3 per cent, the college saw its own proportion of students achieving A or A* grades actually rise by 0.7 per cent.

Economics, further mathematics, English, French and law were among the 36 A-level subjects that achieved a 100 per cent pass rate.More 200 students were awarded A* grades and there were 40 A*s in mathematics alone.

A total of 123 students achieved at least three grade As or better and 39 students achieved a profile of four straight A or A* grades.

Commenting on this year’s A-level results, Truro and Penwith College principal David Walrond said: “It is another wonderful set of outcomes for our students. The focus today is understandably on the moment, on celebrating these great final results, on the numbers and the grades and the university progression secured.

“But, as students and staff here understand, you really cannot achieve moments of celebration and excellent outcomes such as these without providing, week by week, excellent teaching, high levels of post-16 subject expertise, specialist first class facilities, and a culture that allows and encourages students to study, to aspire and to excel.

“Results days like these are great, but they mark the end of a two-year cycle of very hard work, and a new cycle is about to begin as we welcome the next student cohort to the college in just a few days’ time.”
