It is one of Helston Town Band’s most popular events on the calendar and fans of the annual Lismore Proms only have one more day left to wait.

The outdoor concert in Lismore Gardens, by kind permission of Michael Jay, will take place this Saturday (August 24) at 7pm.

This year’s guest soloist will be internationally acclaimed tenor John Treleaven, who returns by popular demand.

He will perform solos in both halves of the concert, as well as lead the finale of Jerusalem, Rule Britannia and Land of Hope and Glory.

Simon Taylor, band spokesman, said: “John is in huge demand as a soloist and the band is delighted at the prospect of working with him again – a very special collaboration between John and the band has recently been recorded, and the first and perhaps only live performance of this collaboration will be heard at the proms this year.”

The band will also welcome Bruce Taylor, who will be taking over compering duties from the recently retired Phillip Hunt.

Tickets, which are selling fast, are available from Christophers Estate Agents in Helston and Porthleven, as well as Pictures and Things Gallery and Heathercraft Fabrics, both in Helston.

Audience members are encouraged to take along a picnic to enjoy while watching the concert, as well as warm clothing and something to sit on.

It will mark the latest fundraising event for the band, following it summer fete at Coronation Park.

Mr Taylor said the weather was kind again and helped make it a busy afternoon that raised more than £1,000 towards band funds.

The day involved a concert performed by the town band as well as performances from the beginner and youth bands. Around the edge of Event’s Square in Coronation Park were fundraising stalls selling cakes, gifts, crafts and paintings. There were also two raffles and bottle tombola.

Mr Taylor said: “The band are very grateful to everyone who attended and supported the band. We are a self-sufficient group that receives no outside sponsorship and are entirely reliant on the generosity of the public, without their support the band would not exist.

“I would also like to say specific thanks to all the helpers and band supporters who run this event – especially the ladies’ committee.”
