Pet pooches were on their best behaviour on Sunday as Gweek Seal Sanctuary hosted its third fun family dog show.

Under sunny skies the fantastic turnout saw 30 dogs compete for prizes from the waggiest tale, the best fancy dress to the most like the owner award.

Lara from the sanctuary said: “Being a seal sanctuary, we love awarding the category ‘Best Rescue Dog’, and it went to a real winner this year, five year old Great Dane Joop.

According to current owner he was bred and sold but the new owners overfed him protein which meant he was growing too quickly and his body couldn’t keep up.

He was given just two weeks to live and handed back to the breeders. However after Carol Wellman from Redruth fostered the little pup, five years later Joop is still going strong, and on the day he even went on to win the best in show prize.

The judge was impressed with his strength , saying he deserved the top spot because of “what he’d been through”.

The event raises funds for Merlin’s Wand, a charity that puts the magic back into the childhoods of seriously ill, disabled and disadvantaged children by arranging great days out.
