No cash for Falmouth 'gateway' roundabouts upkeep
11:00am Wednesday 11th September 2013 in News
New ideas are needed for Falmouth’s roundabouts as Cornwall Council say they don’t have the cash to maintain the planting schemes.
Town councillors heard on Monday that the authority was asking whether the town council would like to take responsibility for them, and to look into sponsorship opportunities to keep them looking blooming lovely. With a number considered “important gateway sites” to the town, particularly in regards to tourism, the town council says it is currently charged an “exorbitant rate” for their up keep.
Councillor Steve Eva said that the council should seize the opportunity to take them on, adding the control of them may even be a benefit of the cuts, with the town council able to maintain them for less money and “hopefully in a more responsive way to the needs of the town”.
Also discussed was whether local groups and businesses could help by taking responsibility for individual roundabouts.
Councillors decided to speak to Budock Water Council about Hillhead Roundabout.
