Helston young farmers prove they are 'good sports'
12:00pm Sunday 15th September 2013 in News
Members of Helston and St Keverne Young Farmers’ Club have proved they are good sports over the past few weeks, in every sense of the term.
After helping out at the annual Cornish Country Fair held at Stithians Showground – organising a sheaf pitching competition and helping out in the catering marquee, serving teas and washing dishes – the club then took part in actual sporting events at the weekend.
Ten members played hockey, netball and rounders at the YFC County Sports Day, winning the rounders and taking second place in netball. This was quite an achievement, with around 20 clubs in the county taking part.
In the past few weeks members have also visited Trenoweth Nurseries at St Keverne, where John Combe showed the them around his daffodil farm.
For their weekly activity tomorrow, Thursday, members will be preparing for their annual ploughing match, which will take place at Burnuick Farm, Gunwalloe this Saturday.
Ploughing will begin at 9.30am, with classes for both tractors and horses.
There is also domestic tent featuring classes for photography, cookery, handicrafts and produce. Entries are still being taken; call Beth Treymane on 07794 038655.
There will be lots for visitors to see during the day and into the evening, including a tractor pull, clay pigeon shoot and sheaf pitching. Food will be served all day.
The event is open to all and proceeds from the day will go to the two charities the club has chosen to
