Town council steps up bid to gain control of Falmouth municipal building
4:00pm Sunday 15th September 2013 in News
Cuts at Cornwall Council could have an accidental benefit to Falmouth, as it may help speed up the transfer of the town’s municipal building to the town council.
The council has been trying to wrest control of the building for a number of years, with the process starting under the old district council regime. After the creation of the unitary authority, Cornwall Council, efforts have faced an uphill struggle.
However now local councillors think they may be in a position to finally get some forward momentum, as there is a possibility that Cornwall Council may want to bring other services from around the town “under one roof”. These may include the Falmouth ‘One Stop Shop moving, councillors heard.
A meeting of the town council’s finance committee heard that while it would involve significant work and have an impact on finances, the council should act now while Cornwall Council is so short of money.
Councillor Steve Eva said: “We have got no choice, we’d better do it now. The building has suffered through a lack of maintenance.”
Councillors agreed to continue negotiations.
