Extra races as fine weather draws Coverack Regatta Day crowds
4:00pm Sunday 29th September 2013 in News
Fine weather for this year’s Coverack Regatta saw so many people arriving to enjoy the day that organisers had to put on extra races.
The day before had been particularly wet, so the annual celebration of water-based activities proved a good excuse to enjoy the scenery and have some fun as well.
High tide was in the middle of the afternoon, which fell ideally for swimming races, diving for plates and hitting each other with hessian sacks on the greasy pole.
The “Go-Bang” with no outboards started off the proceedings and was exciting to watch as they chased each other across the bay. The swimming races were well supported and another race was added to the itinerary because some of the adults wanted a longer course.
The greasy pole’ competition took a long time to complete as there were so many entrants, while there were 24 entrants for the diving for plates. The eventual winners in the under 15 and over 15 classes both managed to collect 13 plates.
The comical diving competition included a fairy, a butterfly and a beached seal, with a group of friendly pirates also joining in.
Tony Carey won the Frank Daw Memorial Cup as he was judged to be the best overall competitor in the boating events; he has now won this coveted trophy three times in a row. Pete Bell won the speedboat race, having said he had “no chance” when surveying the competition before the race.
Liz Hanley, secretary of the regatta, said: “The Regatta Committee wishes to thank the participants, spectators and local businesses who support with raffle prizes and the many vice presidents who contribute annually to funds.
