The latest take on vegetable boxes are being delivered to ‘healthy hubs’ in Helston, the Lizard Peninsula and across West Cornwall after being set up by a farmer’s daughter.
Louise Reynolds has created Healthy Boxes from a base near Penzance.
Unlike some other veg box schemes, the boxes are not delivered to individual homes but instead collection points known as ‘healthy hubs’, where someone coordinates the orders.
Recent investment in new cold storage facilities has allowed room for expansion and now Louise is looking for new hubs in the district.
Anyone running a hub will earn themselves a free box each week, adding up to more than £300 over the year. Hubs can be at homes, schools, workplaces or clubs and people just need to sign up a minimum of ten friends to join, who don’t need to commit to having a box every single week. Explaining the reasoning behind the scheme, Louise said: “We want to help our customers understand just how good locally grown seasonal produce can be. The message may be over-preached but it’s really true. Our seasonless supermarkets mean we have lost touch with when fruit and vegetables taste their best.”
More information is available at www.healthyboxes.co.uk A standard box contains eight types of vegetable or salad and costs £6.50, with a free recipe card and newsletter included.
The Government’s Healthy Start vouchers can be used as part payment for a box.
