Helston’s town centre bus service has been withdrawn as part of a series of cuts.

The number 38 will no longer run, although operators have promised that “most sections” will be replaced by diversions of other services.

The 39 Helston - Leedstown -Camborne service will partly cover this loss, and within Helston journeys will operate via a clockwise loop of Coinagehall Street - Pendeen Park – Gwealdues – Tesco – Sainsburys – Cottage Hospital – Coinagehall Street.

However, this service is being reduced to operating every two hours during off peak times between Camborne and Helston – although the section of route between Camborne and Townshend will retain an hourly service once combined with new service 13.

The 45 Camborne/Praze/Helston route will also cover parts of the lost 38 service – although again be reduced to operating every two hours during off peak times between Camborne and Helston.

Within Helston journeys will operate via an anti-clockwise loop of Coinagehall Street –Tesco Cottage Hospital – Sainsburys – Tesco – Gwealdues – Pendeen Park – Coinagehall Street. The service will no longer continue beyond Camborne Bus Station to Tesco Extra, but passengers can access the superstore by transferring to the new services 46 and/or 47.

The school journey to Helston School will be renumbered as service 945.

It comes after the announcement of cuts in bus services from Cornwall’s two main operators, Western Greyhound and First, as the result of commercial decisions by the operators on less popular services, combined with pressures on the council’s public transport budget.

Since then Cornwall Council has attempted to fill in the gaps where possible and has now published details of a number of forthcoming changes from Sunday, November 3.

Other changes include to the number 2 Penzance/Helston/Falmouth service which has been simplified to an hourly service between Penzance and Falmouth via Helston, Monday to Saturday daytimes. Evening and Sunday service will be two hourly between Helston and Penzance and hourly between Goldsithney and Penzance. This service will no longer operate via Perranuthnoe – a new service 13 will now serve this village.

A reduced frequency will operate during daytime hours for the 2A Helston/Truro route, with the evening service withdrawn altogether owing to poor use.

Also reduced in frequency will be the 34 Redruth/Helston service during off peak hours on Monday to Saturday, as well as on Sundays.

The 35 Helston/Constantine/Falmouth service will be split into two separate services: 35 and 68A. Service 35 will operate between Helston and Falmouth via Gweek, Constantine, Lamanva Cross and direct to/from Falmouth, with the Sunday service withdrawn for the winter.

Passengers wanting to travel between Helford Passage and Falmouth via Mawnan Smith should use the 68A service.

For those travelling to the Lizard Peninsula, the timetable for the number 36 Helston/St Keverne bus has been revised to “better match demand for journeys” – specifically the current 11.32am and 1.32pm journeys from Helston will operate at around 12.30pm. This service will also serve Bulwark Road three times a day.

The 37 Helston/Mullion/The Lizard service timetable has also been revised, with reductions for off peak, evenings and Sundays.
