'Step back in time' Memory Café at at West Cornwall Hospital celebrates first birthday
11:00am Friday 11th October 2013 in News
Colleagues from the Medical Unit at West Cornwall Hospital were joined by Hospital Friends and supporters yesterday (9 October) as they celebrated a year since the opening of the innovative Memory Cafe for patients at the hospital.
The team at West Cornwall Hospital has been leading the way with a number of initiatives to improve care for patients with dementia and memory loss and the weekly reminiscence session held in the ward's refurbished day room – thought to be the first of its kind in an acute hospital - have proven a huge success.
Each Thursday afternoon patients can 'step back in time' playing board games they might remember from their childhood, watching old films and news reports, enjoying a sing song, or tucking into traditional home-made cake and tea served in china cups!
Medical Ward 2 sister, Michelle Wildman said, "You can feel the ambience coming from the room when the Memory Cafe is full swing. The patients get such enjoyment out of it and it really does stimulate speech and activity."
Jo Pope, Jo Wallis and Lisa Williams have been the driving force behind the Memory Cafe and work with a team of volunteers who come in to support the activities. Each week they use a different theme and there's even a rota for cake baking! Lisa recalls a recent patient whose family said it was the first time they had seen their relative smile in many months.
In the last few weeks the Memory Cafe has acquired its own Memory Pod - a vintage living room backdrop complete with TV, radio, telephone and furniture - thanks to fundraising that's being going on over the last year. The Memory Cafe is now regularly used by staff to work with patients at other times of the week and there are plans to create a smaller, similar area on Medical Ward 1.
