Memories shared as Helston class of 1953 hold reunion

Memories from the last 60 years were shared when students, and even a few teachers, from Helston Grammar School gathered at a reunion on Saturday.
They were the class of 1953 and 18 former pupils – around a third of the year group – met at the Wheal Dream restaurant, just outside Helston, for a buffet and a catch up.
Keith Matthew, who acted as secretary, contacting everyone, said: “It went extremely well. There were a lot of old friends that we haven’t met up with for a long time.”
Three teachers also attended: former biology teacher Mike Stevens and couple Eric and Deidre Dare.
Mr Dare, who taught English and music, and Mrs Dare, who also taught English, are celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary this year and marked the occasion with a cake at the reunion.
One of the group gave a speech looking back to the year 1953, including the average wage and the price of things.
“It was a very pleasant evening where there was an awful lot of catching up on old friendships,” added Mr Matthew.
People came from various places in the UK to be there, including Dorset and Hereford, as well as from across Cornwall.
Jim Hall acted as treasurer, while Diane Richards was the main organiser.
A larger reunion is now planned for next year, to which all former students of Helston Grammar School in the 1950s will be invited.
