The couple behind plans to open a fish and chip shop at the top of Helston have withdrawn their application.

Jonathan Jane and his wife Samke wanted to change the Old Turnpike Dairy, off the roundabout at the top of Godolphin Road, into the fish and chip restaurant and takeaway, with an adjoining house to live in.

The building has most recently been used as offices for Cornish Cottage Holidays and has also been used as a shop in the past.

Mr Jane, who grew up in Ruan Minor and at one time worked at Nettles Fish and Chips in the town, wanted to cater for the expanding town in the north, catering for people living in the Water-ma-Trout area, Gwealdues and Trengrouse Way.

However, there was concern from some members of the public – in particular neighbours – who cited customer parking, an increase in traffic and smell as potential issues.

Helston Town Council’s planning committee decided to defer its decision on whether to support or object to the plans until their following meeting, when they hoped to have more information – in particular on highways issues and parking.

Before that meeting could take place, however, the plans were withdrawn in the interim.

It is not known whether Mr Jane plans to resubmit the application with alterations.
