Schools across Falmouth, Penryn, Helston and the Lizard Peninsula will be closed at least in part tomorrow (Thursday) as a result of strike action.

This is being led by the National Union of Teachers (NUT) and the National Association of School Teachers and Union of Women Teachers (NASUWT).

Falmouth School will not be open for students in years seven to 11, although key stage four students may be invited to attend to work on selected activities by a staff members.

Sixth form students will be expected to attend and use the school for independent study when their lessons are not taking place.

Catering facilities will be available with a reduced choice.

In a letter to parents headteacher Brett Miners said: “The decision to close the school or send students home is never taken lightly, but in this instance, where certain staff have elected to take lawful industrial action, I have no choice but to take appropriate steps to ensure the health, safety and well-being of all students at Falmouth School.”

At Penryn College only year 11 and notified children should attend as usual, in full school uniform.

Helston Community College will be closed to all students in years seven to 11, although students in years 12 and 13 may attend college for lessons if their teacher for that subject is not taking industrial action. Those teachers will let their students know if they are available. They may also use the college’s study facilities but this will be unsupervised.

In a letter to parents Graham Vallender, chairman of the governors, said 77 teachers would be on strike and as a result the college would “not be able to function as normal.”

Describing the health and safety of students as “of paramount importance” he added: “This action is not against the college itself, but is part of national industrial action organised by these trade unions and associations, about changes to the pensions, workload, conditions of service, pay, pay progression and job loss.

“Governors do apologise for any inconvenience caused by this decision, but would like to assure you that they are acting in the best interests of the students.”

Mullion School is open for year 11 only.

Some primary schools in these areas will also be affected.

In the Falmouth area Mawnan School will be shut, while in the Helston area Parc Eglos School, Porthleven School and Wendron School will be closed, as will Grade Ruan School on the Lizard Peninsula.
