There was a sunny outlook for this year’s Grade Ruan Autumn Show, both outside and inside the village hall where there was a happy atmosphere.
A good crowd turned out to view the work of 124 exhibitors, who produced well over 800 entries.
The judges enjoyed their work and in many areas the competition was hard fought, especially in the photography, vegetables, cookery and preserves classes.
The show was opened by Dr Christopher Cuff, part of the medical dynasty that has been serving the Lizard Peninsula for more than 40 years.
He praised all the hard work involved in organising and entering community events such as the village show.
His choice of best in show was awarded to Nicola Parkman of Mullion, who produced a huge sample of needlework that must have taken many hours to complete. The centre piece of the show was the bench of vegetables, which were of a high quality with four-foot long parsnips, carrots and leeks. From these Alec Foreman’s long carrots were judged best vegetables.
The cookery judge had the longest job of the day but after much deliberation a moist Dundee cake baked by show veteran Frances Hosken was given the best in cookery. Mandy Pound gained most points in the cookery.
Meanwhile the standard of photography was agreed to be the best ever and a placing this year should be much prized.
