No such thing as a free lunch for Cornwall councillors
5:00am Thursday 24th October 2013 in News
It is said there is no such thing as a free lunch, and that is now certainly the case for Cornwall councillors, after a full council vote.
Councillors have been able to sit down for free at County Hall when there on official business, and claim expenses when on council business.
Like the rest of the population, councillors will now have to bring their own sandwiches, rather than let the taxpeyers foot the bill.
The motion was proposed by councillor Jade Farrington who said that in a time of "enormous cuts", that would "hit some of the poorest and most vulnerable", she could not see the justification for the free food.
He view was backed by enough councillors to see the practice scrapped.
The "gesture" is expected to save about £15,000.
