Former Deputy Prime Minister Lord Heseltine was in Falmouth and Penryn last week and later told business leaders that Cornwall should take control of public spending back from London.
Lord Heseltine visited Pendennis Shipyard in Falmouth and Falmouth University’s Academy for Innovation and Research and the neighbouring Tremough Innovation Centre at the Penryn Campus.
While at Pendennis, Lord Heseltine took part in a round table |discussion about Cornwall’s marine |industry, and in particular the potential for offshore marine renewable energy to make a major contribution to the local economy. After his trip to Falmouth and Penryn, Lord Heseltine addressed more than 120 business leaders in Truro at an event organised by the LEP and the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC).
He said Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly would have to fight its corner for a fair share of £20 billion “single pot” funding |earmarked to support regional growth from 2015, and said both education and business had important roles to play.
He said the UK’s |business community needed to put aside the tribalism of competing business organisations to demonstrate to Ministers that it could be trusted as a partner in deciding how Government money could be used to support growth locally.
