Helston Theatre Company plans major arts festival

The Helston Theatre Company is planning a major arts festival for south west Cornwall and needs your help.

The group plans to have a big top with a 400-seater auditorium, a bar area with a small stage for live music, art installations and outdoor seating in Helston for the last week of next July. The big top will host a variety of shows from stand up comedy, live music and dance, to a full length play, lectures from authors and workshops and storytelling during the day.

The idea is big and ambitious but the company believes this unique event would “be fantastic” for the community.

The working title for the project is Theatre in the Woods.

The theatre company is looking for volunteers who have experience of event production or similar who want to help out. It is also looking for people with events management experience and those interested in stewarding for the show week.

There will be an open meeting on November 26 at 7.30pm at the Angel Hotel in Coinagehall Street, Helston, where people can learn more about the project and register their interest.

Anyone wanting more information or who cannot make it to the meeting, should contact Ben on ben@helstontheatre.com.

Is this one of the groups that wanted to filch the money from the ringfenced community centre money to be spent on their desperate needs?

It sounds like it will be a great community event for locals and holiday makers to enjoy, with a variety of things to choose from. I hope it does really well.

I think it sounds over ambitious, expensive and I hope they don't do it, and it will probably rain.

Its good to have ambition and drive and if they manage to do it , it would be a great achievement. ,who knows if successful it could be an annual event. It will certainly be good for the town and attract a lot of people.

You're missing a great big point meerkats, this is one of the trio that want the community centre money, remember, the art centre Penrose Rd, the museum and the Epworth Hall, what uses the Epworth hall, Helston theatre company? they said I think they wanted money in the trio bid, for disabled access to the hall amongst other things, so they don't have the money for that but all of a sudden they have the money for this huge expensive event, and before you say they have to spend money to make money, we have heard that all before with Cllr Hornsby when they wanted to buy the market stalls, and look what a disaster they are, I bet no one even visited the market stalls this week in the Epworth Hall. Did you go meerkats? there are already market stalls in the Guildhall, did you go there? did anyone that comments on here that the markets are good go to either market? no I thought not.

I went to both, the Epworth Hall and the Guildhall, and purchased goods at both, so perhaps you were a little premature in answering your own question.

I am currently in a position where I am not obliged to prove anything to anyone, least of all some person unknown to me on the Packet website, however, if a genuine need were to arise, then yes I could prove I attended both markets as there were witnesses.

You seem to have a negative outlook on anything for Helston. At every opportunity you strongly criticise the HBIP and their willing band of hard working volunteers doing their bit to improve the town and now you are hoping the planned event doesnt go ahead. Not that it concerns you but no, i wasnt able to go to either of the markets ,but if i said i did you would accuse me of lying as you have with Gill. You have no right to ask anyone for proof that they did go, and to accuse Gill of lying is disgusting and you should apologise to her.

I can think what I like, if I think GZM is lying that's up to me. I don't believe she went to either markets. I'm not apologising for having an opinion. You say I have a negative opinion on everything for Helston, no I don't I said the clean up was good and the hanging baskets, just because I don't agree with wasting money. The market stalls are a waste of money I think and I think a big top is. What will they do with the big top if it pours with rain and is cold, stick it in the Epworth hall like the market stalls. I'm not negative i'm realistic. I thought they needed their money for disabled access. GZM is deluded and she didn't go to the markets.

Krazyitchkatie said they cant rent market stalls out to people unless they have their own public liability insurance but I don't believe her because I saw Jake Riding taking some stuff into the Epworth Hall to sell and I doubt he has insurance he isn't even 18. And if the Epworth Hall has its own insurance then why cant anyone sell what they like on a stall like deluded GZM suggested originally? See, I was down in the town market day and I saw the traders go in but I didn't see GZM go into to either of the markets, I didn't go in them but I never saw her going in them.

Ken, I would be very surprised if you even know what I look like, and I find it hard to believe that you could have managed to observe exactly who went into both markets for the duration of their opening times, considering the Epworth Hall and the Guildhall are located at opposite ends of the street and on opposite sides of the road. I am extremely observant but even I couldn't manage to do that and guarantee 100% coverage. I would imagine the best place to be positioned would be the top of Church street facing down towards the Epworth Hall whilst keeping watch to the left at the Guildhall, however, I wouldn't think you spend your day in the town watching who enters either of the two buildings. So please do not accuse me of lying as I attended both markets.

Ken - do you propose putting CCTV cameras at the entrance to the hall so everyone can be documented entering and leaving? I think it would be good to have a public record of this. Perhaps we could use DNA swabs to ensure there's no doubt?

You seem to know the whereabouts of everyone in the town, are you a voyeur? Do you have some sort of insurance database too? Do you work for GCHQ?

I'm not sure I have mentioned anyone else in my comment. If someone wants to go to a market, what business is it to me, or you for that matter? I don't live in a dark world where I think that everyone is automatically lying to me. And people that I don't know, don't have to explain themselves to me.

Instead of trying to put words into other people's mouths, why don't you try to engage in some intelligent debate? Or is that too difficult? :)

Because there is no one on this site that can debate intelligently with me, GZM is just deluded about everything and is a bit thick and meerkats just worries about her thumbs down all the time.

GZM you say I am intent on saying no one went to the markets, well you would be in tent if you went to the big top. Are you going to the markets this week?

you are the one that goes on about the thumbs down all the time ,i have gone past caring about it, though it did bother me at the beginning i must admit. If people have such sad lives that they just want to keep giving thumbs down everytime they see a comment from me thats their choice, maybe they should get out more. You are so rude to Gill and you are so far off the mark calling her deluded and thick. Gills comments are always well written, factual and interesting to read. Gill is very intelligent and fair and never replies to comments such as yours by being nasty back, all in all that makes her a far better person than you.

Hi Everyone,

There seems to be a bit of confusion on this comment thread about Helston Theatre Company and our links to the Epworth Hall. We are a user group of the hall, just like the One and All Judo Club, ACT1 etc. Our finances and committee are independent of the Hall. Any funding applications made by the Epworth Hall are completely separate to Helston Theatre Company, though we wish them every success in their building improvements.

If you would like to hear about the Theatre in the Woods project do come along to the Angel Hotel on Tuesday 26th November at 7:30pm where the facts, aims, and the project as a whole will be presented.

Ken, you were wrong about the Epworth Hall and the theartre group and the trio bid, you were wrong about Gill and the markets. You are rude on this website and plain nasty on another website. Why dont you start respecting others opinions and feelings. If you knew Gill you would realise she is not thick and unlike you would never deliberately be rude or unkind. Have you ever heard of the last straw, because I think you managed that on another website as far as Gill is concerned, so why dont you stop being rude to people you have never even met.
The big top sounds a brilliant idea.
