Knowing that the councillor in question has a sense of humour and is quite often the cause of much hilarity at Falmouth Town Council meetings, the Packet has decided to publish this photo which shows Diana Merrett going to odd lengths to demonstrate the size and strength of the new seagull proof sacks.

Every household in the Smithick ward of Falmouth is being given one of the sacks thanks to councillors Candy Atherton and Diana Merrett, who bought them using their council |community grants.

The distribution of the sacks has begun and people are being urged to use them to help combat the problem |of litter, which is usually found strewn around after seagulls have attacked bin liners left out for collection.

The sacks can hold up to six black bags and this was |demonstrated to residents who attended last week’s Arwenack police liaison meeting by Councillor Merrett, who decided to |clamber into one just to prove how big they are.

Laughter aside, a letter from Councillor Atherton was then read out in which she explained the |background to her action. She said: “Towns across the country that have used the bags have found they make a big contribution to keeping their town clean. I am hopeful this will be the case in Falmouth as well.

“Reducing the litter will help to keep clean-up costs down and make life more pleasant for us all.”
