Helston is set to sparkle this evening as the Christmas lights are switched on in a blaze of glory.

The lights are considered to be among some of the best in Cornwall and from 5pm the build up to the big switch-on will begin, with the main event taking place at 7.30pm.

There is plenty available for the family to do entertainment wise throughout the evening, the usual stalls, fun rides, hot food vans and entertainers will be there to keep the evening going.

There will also be plenty of opportunity to warm up, with hot drinks being served throughout the town.

From 6.45pm Lady Street will be closed where it meets Five Wells Lane, meaning any traffic coming that way will have to continue along Five Wells Lane to access the town. Bus routes are also affected due to road closures.

The recommendation is to get into town early, with people expected to travel far and wide to see the switch on.

There is also a lot more fun planned for the coming weeks over Christmas, with an ice skating rink from December 2 and 8 and Santa visiting the town's annual Christmas fayre on December 20.
