Helston to sparkle at Christmas Lights switch-on tonight: DETAILS

Helston is set to sparkle this evening as the Christmas lights are switched on in a blaze of glory.

The lights are considered to be among some of the best in Cornwall and from 5pm the build up to the big switch-on will begin, with the main event taking place at 7.30pm.

There is plenty available for the family to do entertainment wise throughout the evening, the usual stalls, fun rides, hot food vans and entertainers will be there to keep the evening going.

There will also be plenty of opportunity to warm up, with hot drinks being served throughout the town.

From 6.45pm Lady Street will be closed where it meets Five Wells Lane, meaning any traffic coming that way will have to continue along Five Wells Lane to access the town. Bus routes are also affected due to road closures.

The recommendation is to get into town early, with people expected to travel far and wide to see the switch on.

There is also a lot more fun planned for the coming weeks over Christmas, with an ice skating rink from December 2 and 8 and Santa visiting the town's annual Christmas fayre on December 20.

telstar, judging by the turn out for the Christmas light switch on, I would say that hundreds of people agree with your comment, they presumably just don't happen to read this website, I certainly agree with you.
Helston Christmas lights are like a work of art, and as with other towns and villages it's all thanks to dedicated volunteers.

Telstar I have voted thumbs up for every comment on this thread except PRs whose I voted down. I have not voted on my own comment at all. I can't help what votes I get and on most of my comments about Helston I normally get lots of thumbs down. I don't care about the voting, you keep on making reference to the votes I get, I am sorry but there is nothing I can do about it, look on the bright side, at least you aren't made to look stupid by verbal abuse on here like I am.

I think we could have done without the fireworks, this was about a xmas light switch on, what do fireworks have to do with it. Save them for a more appropriate time. And telstar, you have now on about five occasions gone on about the amount of thumbs up Gill gets so it does obviously bother you and sticking lol at the end of your comment is just a cop out to expect her to take it lightheartedly. You also moaned 3 times on here about people thumbing your comments down and you called them losers on one occasion. You also said how often some people comment on here on several occasions. Well yes, you can say what you like about the voting etc but then I can say what I like, and I think you are being childish keep picking fault about the voting.

Oh and telstar, for you to say, trust Gillian to take this all too seriously, I think is a joke coming from you, who obviously takes the voting to heart otherwise you wouldn't repetitively have moaned when you got thumbs down. I got it wrong about who Gill was, I hold my hands up to that, but now I know she is genuine and who she says she is, I am glad she is just a member of the public that wants the best for Helston and she has put up with so much abuse from my brother on here, so why shouldn't she take your cheap shots about the voting seriously. It's clear to me it bothers you otherwise you wouldn't have called people losers in the past and said on a couple of occasions when you got thumbs down you said Helston gets what it deserves in a derogatory way. The only thing Helston deserves is to do well. I don't agree with fireworks for a xmas light switch on but the lights are brilliant and do Helston proud and so do the volunteers that do all the work.

When I end my comment 'lol' it should be taken a bit more light-heartedly than when I do not.

I have used these web pages for quite some time to express my views, no matter whether it is intended to be funny or deadly serious

I will leave the tiny minority of the Helston public (that's about 20 of you out of a population of over 12,000) to continue expressing your opinions, but frankly I've got much better things to do than to read and write the 'tittle tattle' of the minority. It's been fun sometimes, but I do not see the point continuing on here, when all you get is the same two or three, saying the same things over and over and over and.................
........Bye

Only just read your comment, that's a shame I enjoy reading your views. You are one of the original and intelligent commenters that do not just use the comments section to be rude to people.
We can't help being the Helston few that comment, some people just seem to prefer to vote rather than comment.

I don't think telstar should have told people they take life too seriously and to lighten up anyway, he had no idea of their life circumstances. Look at me I have an elderly father to look after and drunken trouble making brother amongst other things.

Massive well done to the volunteers who work so hard on the lights practically year round - seeing them out there from 6am till night some days - it was really impressive and I hope they know how appreciated they are. Good effort!

Yes that will be because telstar has had a problem ever since the voting came in and on numerous occasions has had digs at Gill about what votes up she gets but never seemed to bother him when she got all thumbs down on the Helston BIP articles and he got thumbs up, he's stopped commenting I think because of the voting but seems to me he wants to blame someone else why he's going to stop commenting. And yeas I appreciate all the work the volunteers do, best town in Cornwall for me.
