The organisers of the Masked Ball have said they will be reducing the capacity for next year’s May event by a sixth.

The organisers of the event, which is held near Porthleven said the decision had nothing to do with the difficulties, caused by wild weather, at this autumn’s Hallowe’en Masked Ball, but were due to traffic issues and green concerns.

The announcement came in the same week 500 early bird tickets for the popular May event went on sale, temporarily crashing servers on the ticketing website.

The ball is licensed for up to 5,000 revellers, and 3,000 ballgoers attended in May, but there will only be 2,500 tickets available for 2014.

Nigel Pengelly, Masked Ball’s press spokesman, said: “We want to make it a better experience for everybody rather than just having as many people as possible.

“We had some problems last year with people getting in for free, so we have also increased our security.

“Our main issue was people coming in cars, and people coming in separate cars, and taking up car parking space. So we’re trying to reduce our carbon footprint and encourage lift sharing by charging for parking, and reducing the numbers will also reduce traffic.”

“It’s a large site, so we have no issues with overcrowding. It’s not all about making money, it’s about putting on a good event.”

In October, revellers were turned away from the Hallowe’en Ball after torrential rain and long tailbacks led to a calamitous series of unforeseeable incidents, including two medical emergencies, a car on fire, a stranded ambulance and a runaway camel.

However, ball director Kelvin Batt called the event “a stunning triumph in the face of incredible adversity” with those who made it to the party enjoying themselves in spite of the weather.

The organisers lost money on that event after reimbursing tickets for those who couldn’t get in, although some took up the offer of exchanging their Hallowe’en tickets for a pass to the festival in May.

Mr Pengelly said the Masked Ball’s management was talking with police and licensing officials about the viability of another Hallowe’en version, but that it would not be held at Rosuick Farm again.
