Menfolk of Helston and the Lizard Peninsula took a moment to honour the “mo” at the weekend as they welcomed the conclusion of “Movember.”

Throughout November men across the area have been growing moustaches as part of the annual campaign to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK.

Although the main aim is fundraising, good natured moustache themed contests have been taking place amongst pubs and organisations.

This included The Five Pilchards at Porthallow, where Movember became a family affair this year with wives and friends voting on the best “mo.”

Judging was carried out by |anyone buying a Movember judging form for £1. All 11 contestants were then judged on texture, growth and style and “kissability.”

Competition was close with the eventual winner being John Clarke, who scooped first prize having dressed for the evening in a dinner jacket – which was accessorised nicely by the coveted Movmeber sash.

Brian Jewell took second prize, with Kirk Bird coming in third.

A total of £50 was raised, which was then added to by Geoffrey Rogers, who decided to take the reverse approach. The local pool captain shaved his beard off for £150 – making it the first time he had been clean shaven in over 35 years.

All the competitors thanked their wives for their “perseverance” during the month of Movember.

Pre festive season facial hair was also grown at St Michael’s Church in Helston, where |congregation members John Dower and John Boase, a town councillor, sported tashes for the final time at Sunday’s service.

Mr Dower grew his as part of a group effort by Stithians Male Voice Choir, which raised more than £900 between just over 20 members. Their money is going to the Chestnut Appeal, for prostate cancer awareness.

Mr Boase raised about £100 by growing his moustache.

A familiar face to Movember fundraising is Porthleven and Cornwall councillor Andy Wallis.

Writing on his blog Mr Wallis said: “I have to say this year’s attempt is my best yet. It is also a year of firsts, as I had my first foray into using moustache wax and ‘styling’ the darn thing. Believe me, you enter a whole different world with moustache wax.”

This year, however, Mr Wallis has decided to continue his fundraising efforts by continuing into December with “Decembeard.” Arriving slightly later to the scene, this challenges people to grow a beard for bowel cancer awareness.
