Police in Cornwall are reminding people to secure their homes in the lead up to Christmas when the risk of domestic burglary increases and presents on show can be a target for criminals.

Chief Inspector Mark Bolt said: “Over the festive period we are recommending that householders take care by keeping doors and windows locked and secure, and by keeping presents and valuables away from outside view. The majority of burglars are opportunists who enter homes where windows are left open or doors are left either open or unlocked.”

Presents in vehicles can also be a target for potential thieves.

Chief Inspector Bolt said: “Thieves are well aware that shopping areas and car parks are packed with people spending their hard-earned money on presents. Shoppers can reduce the risk of becoming victims by keeping presents and valuables hidden from view.”
