A Cornish language charity is hoping to use crowdsourcing to raise £3,000 to get popular children’s book Topsy and Tim printed in Cornish.

Kowethas an Yeth Kernewek, the Cornish Language Fellowship, which works to promote the use of Cornish in everyday life, has translated three different Topsy and Tim books into Kernewek – Topsy and Tim Have a Birthday Party (Topsy ha Tim Ha’n Kevewi Penn-bloodh), Topsy and Tim Go Camping (Topsy ha Tim a wra kampya) and Topsy and Tim On the Farm (Topsy ha Tim War an Bargen Tir).

The books will be published by Penguin as soon as the funds are raised – but there is now less than two weeks left to do it in.

The launch of the appeal has attracted more than 60 pledges on crowdsourcing website Crowdfunder.co.uk.

Backers can pledge money in return for fun language-related rewards – everything from a copy of the book for a pledge of £10, a house name translated into Cornish for £6, to guided walks and language classes.

Within two weeks, the Kowethas raised half of its target and is now looking to keep up the momentum.

Tony Hak, who translated the books, said he had enjoyed the task, adding: “Translating materials for children is always fun and interesting, but this was also a nostalgia trip for me because my own children loved having Topsy and Tim read to them when they were little.

“That's why I really hope the campaign to get three of the titles published in Cornish will be a success. We really need some good quality books for children and Topsy and Tim certainly fit the bill."

The project is part of the Crowdfund Cornwall campaign, which promotes fundraising ideas in Cornwall.

The campaign ends at 8.57am on Friday, December 20, 2013 with £1,428 still to raise. You can pledge your support at http://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/topsy-and-tim-in-cornish/
