Rare rocks from outer space land at St Martin Primary School
Rare samples of moon rocks and a collection of meteorites landed at St Martin Primary School last week for a five-day visit.
Among them was a 1.2 billion year old piece of Mars and a 4.3 billion year old nickel meteorite – particularly impressive considering the solar system is only 4.6 billion years old.
The lunar samples, provided by the UK’s Science and Technology Facilities Council, were collected in the late 1960s and early 1970s during some of NASA’s first manned space missions to the moon.
Lunar material weighing 382kg was brought back to Earth – mostly for use by scientists in their studies, but small quantities have been placed into educational packages.
