The Porthtowan Beach and Dune Management Group is appealing for volunteers to join them in burying used Christmas trees at Porthtowan dunes on Saturday between 10am and 3pm.

Supported by Cornwall Council and CORMAC, the group is currently carrying out a project to protect the dunes from further damage. The Christmas trees will act as wind traps creating the "perfect environment" where marram grass can be planted in the early Spring. This will grow and spread to help stabilise the dune.

“The dunes are an important part of the beach environment providing coastal defences and a habitat for a variety of insects, small mammals and birds,” said Councillor Joyce Duffin, Cornwall Council member for Mount Hawke and Portreath.

“They are also used by many people for a range of recreational activities and while it’s fantastic to see the area is well used and appreciated, unfortunately, over time, these activities have damaged the dunes.

“A sustainable way of protecting the dunes is to use natural materials to limit sand movement and we hope the trees will be the first step in stabilising the area.

“Please join us on Saturday, January 11– all you need is a real Christmas tree, some warm clothes and a shovel!”

If you are unable to attend the day, but would like to donate a tree please leave it behind Porthtowan Surf Lifesaving Club before Saturday 11 January.
